A practical workflow for XPath Tester

Test XPath expressions against XML payloads, validate selections and debug XML extraction logic for SAP CPI and integrations.

1. Prepare

Provide XML and an XPath expression. For an InvoiceNumber node, //*[local-name()="InvoiceNumber"] can select its value, such as 4500012345.

2. Review

Inspect returned nodes or values and their count. Bind namespace prefixes explicitly when used; local-name() can also match unrelated nodes with the same local name.

3. Apply

The expression is evaluated through the server workflow. Confirm namespace bindings and supported XPath behavior against the engine used by your actual integration.

Verification before operational use

Use a representative case with the inputs needed to reproduce it.
Confirm the result in the authorized target environment when runtime versions, namespaces, extensions, permissions or system configuration can change the outcome.
Record the source, assumptions, tool settings and expected result so another reviewer can reproduce the check and distinguish verified facts from recommendations.
